Chat & Chew

July 19, 2024

The Chat & Chew community event was centered around an open dialogue in Male and Female circle groups. We discussed topics such as Trauma, Dating, Self-Confidence, societal expectations, challenges DC youth face and the changes we experience as we grow up, just to name a few. This event allowed youth to feel empowered by using their voice to express thoughts and feelings, while also feeling safe and secure in a trusting environment, where they could do so without feeling judged or misguided.

Budgeting & Money Management

July 23, 2024

Scholars practiced exchanging play money by making purchases at our BLACC House Store. Scholars also got the opportunity to actively work through a sample budget plan to find out what their wants and need are and what financial sacrifices they would make in the real world as an adult. Essentially, teaching the scholars about financial responsibility will help them and the future generations to come.

Cooking & Blind Taste Testing

July 25, 2024

Cooking and Blind taste testing activity was a great way for all of us to collaborate and enjoy some authentic community “family” vibes. Cooking allowed students to create an Alfredo sauce from scratch, integrating ratios and measurements to reign in those math skills. Our young babies explored their sensory development during the Blind taste activity, where they were able to observe and analyze several different snacks through Taste, Touch, Smell and Sight.

DIY Day

August 1, 2024

Do It Yourself Day! Students used simple ingredients to create moon clay that helped us make our stress ball, for times we are feeling slightly overwhelmed. We also explored our creative design side, creating our own bracelets and necklaces. Both activities were simple but therapeutic as we get ready to start a new school year.
